The History of Web Design
The Internet's very first web site was born in the early 1990's and soon became a popular way for individuals and businesses alike to promote their products, services and ideas on the world wide web. The very first websites were programmed in a computer language called HTML (HyperText Markup Language) which has survived the test of time and is now being widely used in its 4th version HTML4, with the next major version, HTML 5 being rolled out in the very near future. HTML 4 has been the main website programming language for nearly 10 years now and has piloted the development of hundreds if not thousands of other internet programming languages, software and platforms that are used in conjunction with each other to develop modern, eye catching and dynamic web sites for presentation on the internet.
Web Design and Web Development
Modern web design techniques require a whole range of different practices that enable web designers to build a both stunning and interactive websites. The process of creating a web site can be summarised as follows:
1. The Web Design
The main aim of a web site is to meet all the requirements laid out in the original client specification. The majority of websites are geared towards attracting web site visitors with a view to converting them into paying customers or subscribers. The main aim of a web site design is to reassure, educate and persuade a web site visitor that they have found the ideal place for the information, products or services that they are looking for. The objective of the web design company or sole web designer is to produce a suitable web site design that is appealing to the target audience and encourages them to view more pages from the web site. A good web designer will use a multitude of programs, skills and various software packages to design a web site. An example of these are as follows:
Mock-up designs - are used by web designers to quickly produce a selection of layouts and visuals for initial design approval from the client.
Adobe Photoshop - can be used to produce the above mock web designs and web optimised graphics.
Adobe Illustrator - is another program that is used for creating logos, graphics and other design elements in vector format so they can be scaled indefinitely.
Adobe Flash –is a program used to produce animations, website video and visuals and functionality on a web site.
Adobe Dreamweaver - is the main program used to build a website and is used to assemble all the various components of a web site and create the master web page layout. Dreamweaver is widely used by web designers as a design tool in the process of creating a web site.
Cascading Style Sheets –or CSS as it is known in the web design trade is used with HTML to design and style the web site from a single file that contains special coding instructions to determine the formatting of text, images and layout elements throughout the whole website. The use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) has many advantages and enables websites to have advanced design features, lower file sizes and consistent styling throughout the web site. The look and feel of the entire web site can be changed simply by editing one CSS file.
2. Web Development
Web development is the term used for the process of developing a web site for presentation on the internet (World Wide Web) or an intranet (a private network).
This process can include client liaison, web design, web content management, scripting or coding, Content Management Systems (CMS) and e-commerce development. Web design companies usually refer to "web development"as the main non-design aspect of building web sites such as bespoke coding requirements and online database development. Web development can range from building the simplest static web page to the most complex automated internet applications. The web development process may be carried out by a single web designer or could be a team effort carried out by a group of designers / coders each responsible for their own section of the web design project.
Web development is carried out using a wide range of programming languages and skills to meet a clients web site specification. Web development can be as basic as building a web page in HTML to developing a comprehensive database driven website. There are a variety of languages and tools used by Web Developers or Web Designers during the web development process including:
HTML - stands for Hypertext Markup Language. It is the most widely used language amongst web designers.
XHTML - is similar to HTML, however it is stricter, cleaner, and recommended by W3C.
XML - stands for Extensive Markup Language; it is designed to store data.
RSS - Stands for 'Real Simple Syndication' and is often used on blogs to provide a feed to its users..
ASP.NET - stands for Active Server Pages and is used on Windows servers to create dynamic and interactive websites.
PHP - Is an open source language used on Linux servers to create dynamic webpages. it is often used in conjunction with a database platform such as MySQL.
MySQL - Is a Open Source Database platform. It is mainly used in conjunction with another language to create interactive and database-driven websites.
AJAX - Is a combination of XML and JavaScript. It allows a webpage to send/receive data without reloading the entire page among other things.
Javascript - Is a client-side language often combined with HTML to add interactivity to websites.
Actionscript/Flash - Is used within flash applications to add functionality and complexity. It can be used to create entire websites, but it's not recommended.
